The terribleness of the movie probably wouldn’t have bothered me so much, except for the fact that I had been dreaming about it ever since the book was just an ongoing story that the author was posting chapter-by-chapter on his website. This is as if The Fellowship of the Ring had begun with an hour of the hobbits hanging out with Tom Bombadil and ended with Frodo giving the One Ring to Aragorn instead of taking it to Mordor. As it closes, the film ends with the two friends playing basketball but quickly transport into a post-apocalyptic dimension.

While the plot gets rather murky during the in-between, John comes back to life mid-way through the film to save the Earth with Dave by his side. As the drug continues to take a hold of Dave’s mind, John dies as a result of it. The film opens on Dave telling a news reporter about the soy sauce and how it expands the mind. Not only does it alter the mind but it opens up gateways to other dimensions.
